Post-Fastathon Preliminary Wrap Up

Hi all!

Thanks so much for a successful Fastathon! The donations are still coming in and we are already over our goal of $10,000 this year. However, EHHOP's total operating budget is $40,000 this year and every dollar that comes in through the Fastathon goes towards that ultimate goal. So thanks to those below that have continued to push us through the top!

Anonymous - $50
Shashi Anand - $50
Bill and Jenn Hughes - $50
Rebecca Agostino - $100
Colin Chazen - $25
Sidney Le - $25
Anonymous - $100
Mr. and Mrs. Mark Oppenheimer - $139
Marie O'Reilly - $10
Mr. and Mrs. Mark Weissler - $100
Karl B. Kenzler - $100
Stephen Salmon - $100
Dr. Jessica Taylor - $100

This brings our total to $11,554. Thanks so much to you all and be on the look-out for a final wrap-up and pictures!

GOAL!!!

HI EVERYONE!

I am so excited (notice the all caps in the salutation?) to announce that WE HAVE REACHED OUR FUNDRAISING GOAL FOR THE EHHOP FASTATHON 2012!!!!! THANKS TO THE DONORS BELOW FOR BRINGING IT HOME!!!

Mike and Debbie Rankine - $150
Richard and Susan Lahne - $250
Anonymous - $300
Kris Stensland - $50

This brings us to a total of $10,580. We are $580 over our goal, and this doesn't even count the other donations that I have not yet been told about.

Thank you all so much for your support of EHHOP's work in East Harlem. EHHOP's annual budget is $40,000, and the EHHOP Fastathon always strives to raise at least 25% of that operating budget so that the clinic can continue to provide medications, specialty services, social work services, nutrition services, and many more services for uninsured East Harlem patients who would otherwise have nowhere else to go.

Thank you all again and a have a good night. This is a huge achievement for us in the history of the Fastathon, and this will be my last post before tomorrow.

Rolling, rolling, rolling...

Hi again!

I am happy to say that since the blog post this morning, we have made spectacular progress towards our goal of raising $10,000 for EHHOP's work in East Harlem. The new donors are listed and the donor list to the right has been updated.

Dr. Miriam Merad - $100 (2X giver)
Rebecca Blank - $50
Anonymous - $100
Jacqueline Rankine - $50
Dr. Robert Desnick - $100
Janet Ciarrocca - $100
Dr. Charlotte Cunningham-Rundles - $50
Anonymous - $100
Daniel Choi - $50
Naomi Weiss-Goldman - $20
Wendy Chi - $20

This puts us at $9830, which is just $170 short of our goal of $10,000! We are getting close! Stay tuned! For those of you who are fasting, the preliminary final numbers will be unveiled at tomorrow's break-fast!

Thanks all for your support of EHHOP!

Home Stretch!

Hi all!

Tomorrow morning, 139 Mount Sinai students (medical and graduate) will awake before sunrise and eat breakfast. Then, at approximately 7AM, all 139 of these students will stop eating and drinking and go for 12 hours through their day. At 7PM, these students will participate in a break-fast meal, generously provided by Maharaja Palace and Famous Famiglia and paid for by Mount Sinai's Student Council as well as the Graduate School.

Why do we do this? We do this to raise money for the East Harlem Health Outreach Partnership (www.mssm.edu/ehhop). We do this because 6 years ago, the Muslim Students Association and EHHOP got together and used the tradition of Ramadan to ask for financial sponsors who would give money in support of the students who willingly fasted to support EHHOP. We do this because we believe in the mission of EHHOP to provide healthcare to those who are uninsured and who have conditions which have debilitating consequences if not well controlled. We do this because we believe that healthcare is a right and not a privilege. We do this because we care.

Our goal this year was to raise $10,000 and 130 student fasters in support of EHHOP. EHHOP's annual budget this year is $40,000, and at the moment, we are just short of our goal of $10,000. Below is the list of fasters who have donated in the past few days since my last post. Thanks so much for your support!

Mr. and Mrs. David Saiger - $40
Dr. Scott Friedman - $250
Dr. Lloyd Mayer - $250
Eric Chiang - $50
Yvette Wang - $20
Dr. Neal M. Kurzrok - $100
Ms. Ella D. Kaszubski - $25
Mubashar Khan - $100
Adam Jacobs - $100

This puts us at $9090 raised for EHHOP! We are $910 short of our goal of $10,000! I know in the last 24 hours of the Fastathon Campaign we can do this! Thanks so much for all of you who have given so much of your time, energy, money, and future-willpower (for the fasters) into supporting the EHHOP Fastathon and EHHOP.

Take care and happy fasting tomorrow!

A White Coat Ceremony Update

Hi all,

Today is Mount Sinai's White Coat Ceremony, a tradition in which Mount Sinai's first year medical students (this year the class of 2016) are given their white coats and a stethescope. It's typically a tradition of honor, in which a medical student oath is recited, and is a time and place for family and friends to publicly acknowledge all the work the students have put into their pre-medical work.

I am happy to say that many of the students signed up to fast are part of this first year class, and so, along with the rest of the Mount Sinai community, I congratulate you, the class of 2016, on making it this far. It will be four fun-filled years together, with many trials and tribulations along the way, and I wish you the best.

But I digress...

This puts us at $8155, or 81.5% of our goal! We only need $1845 to go! This may seem like a lot, but I know we can do it!

Happy weekend all!

First Wave of Fasters

Hi all!

We have officially rolled out recruitment for Mount Sinai students to fast. A copy of the email is pasted below for those of you that are interested in some trends about the Fastathon. Students, if you would like to sign up, you can do so here.

Here are the list of fasters we have thus far...

Ammar Siddiqui
Andrew Chow
Bertille Gaigbe-Togbe
Brett Weinstock
Chloe Ciccariello
David Chiang
Eduardo Contijoch
Elisa Nabel
Emily Sorg

That's 38 fasters, which means we only need 92 more to reach our goal of 130 fasters! Remember, for some donors, they are pledging $1 or $2 per faster we get, so that would mean if we get 130 fasters and we get $20 total in pledges, that's $2600 donated to EHHOP! If you would like to sign up, you can do so here.

Thanks to the donors below for agreeing to give...

Dr. Karen Zier - $100 (5X Giver)
Dr. Andrew Chow - $1/faster (5X Giver)

2012 Fastathon - First Update!

Hi all,

The 2012 Fastathon is steadily underway, and we have an enthusiastic group of donors. The Fastathon Organizing Committee has spent the last two evenings working to email Sinai faculty, staff, friends, and family to raise vital funds for EHHOP's operations in the East Harlem Community. Two quick notes:

1. This year, we have an ambitious goal of raising $10,000, which only covers 1/4 of EHHOP's operating budget!
2. This year, we also have an ambitious goal of recruiting 130 student fasters. Recruitment begins in earnest next week, so stay tuned!

And now for the donor roll! The following people have responded and pledged to support our cause:

Dr. David Thomas - $2/faster (6X giver)
Dean David Muller - $1/faster (6X giver)
Drs. Yasmin Meah and Peter Gliatto - $300 (6X giver)

Dr. Roberto Posada - $1/faster (5X giver)

Ann-Gel Palermo - $25 (4X giver)
Dr. Leslie Kerr - $50 (4X giver)
Dr. Patricia Bloom - $50 (4X giver)
Dr. David Bechofer - $20 (4X giver)
Dr. Steve and Erica Itzkowitz - $50 (4X giver)

Noa Simchoni - $50 (3X giver)

David Chiang - $50
Dr. Jonathan Arend - $25
Kathleen Davis - $100
Dr. Joanne Stone - $2/faster
Karen Jerome - $100
Anonymous - $1000

Thanks to all the above for their prompt generosity!

We are currently at $2600, which is 26% of our target ($10,000).

The list of donors will continue to grow, and you can follow it and our progress on the right of this blog. In addition, next week, we will begin recruiting student fasters, and we hope to hit 130!

Thanks again and please contact mr.fastathon@gmail.com if you are interested in donating and/or fasting or if you have questions about EHHOP or the Fastathon!

7th Annual Fastathon!

Welcome to the official blog for Mount Sinai School of Medicine's Fastathon 2012, which will take place September 19, 2012. This annual event was started 7 years ago by two medical students, Mubashar Khan and Faraaz Shah, as a way to tie the Muslim tradition of Ramadan (where Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset for one month) with community service and supporting EHHOP's mission of providing healthcare to those in the East Harlem community. The Fastathon itself has two components:

1) students pledge to fast from dawn to dusk
2) sponsors pledge an amount per faster (or flat sum) to donate.

All proceeds are donated to the East Harlem Health Outreach Partnership (EHHOP) to fund medications, social work, and referrals for EHHOP patients. Since 2004, EHHOP has provided no cost primary care for over 600 uninsured residents of East Harlem.

The last six Fastathons have raised over $30,000 for EHHOP. For this year's 7th Annual Fastathon, we have set 130 fasting participants as our recruitment goal and $10,000 as our fundraising goal. These are both ambitious goals, but with the collective effort of the Sinai community, we fully anticipate achieving both. Last year, we set a goal of $7500 and reached $9777, so $10,000 should be doable with your help!

You can see the success of Fastathon 2011 and learn more about the East Harlem Health Outreach Partnership. Feel free to direct any questions to mr.fastathon@gmail.com.
